Feed is one of the biggest expenses in the cattle business.
Feed is one of the biggest expenses in the cattle business.
Yet cattle can vary dramatically in how much feed it takes to produce the same pound of gain.
That's why feed efficiency isn't a buzzword at Byergo.
It's measured.
We collect individual feed-efficiency data because cattlemen deserve to know more than how a bull looks or what his pedigree says.
We want to know:
How much does he eat?
How much does he gain?
What does that pound of gain actually cost?
Feed conversion tells you how many pounds of feed an animal consumes to produce one pound of gain.
Lower is better.
Using the benchmark in our 2026 testing:
Industry average: ~6.5:1
Byergo tested sale bulls: ~4.9:1
Some individual Byergo bulls have performed considerably better again.
That's why every tested bull in our sale catalog includes the numbers that matter:
Feed Conversion
How many pounds of feed it took to produce a pound of gain.
Conversion Ratio
How his conversion compares with the benchmark.
Cost of Gain
What it cost to add that pound.
Efficiency matters whether you finish your calves or never feed one yourself.
Background calves?
Better conversion can mean a lower cost for every pound you add before sale day.
Sell calves at weaning?
The buyer feeding them still cares about efficiency.
Retain replacements?
This may be where efficiency matters most.
Over years of selection, we've seen daughters of efficient-converting genetics develop into the kind of females we want to keep—easy-fleshing, fertile cows capable of staying productive in the herd.
It's a cowherd trait.
